การแต่งงาน คือ พิธีกรรมที่ประกาศความเป็นสามี-ภรรยากัน ในงานพิธีนั้น ว่าที่สามีจะเรียกว่า เจ้าบ่าว ส่วนว่าที่ภรรยาเรียกว่า เจ้าสาว เรียกรวมกันเป็น คู่บ่าวสาว การแต่งงานถือเป็นการเริ่มต้นสำหรับการใช้ชีวิตคู่ที่ถูกต้องและสมบูรณ์ของหมู่มวลมนุษย์ชาติ การที่จะแต่งงานกันได้นั้น ทั้งฝ่ายหญิงและฝ่ายชายต้องเห็นพ้องต้องกันและอยู่ในวัยอันพอเหมาะสมควร มีหน้าที่การงานที่ดีที่จะพาครอบครัวให้อยู่รอดได้ ประเพณีและวัฒนธรรมของการแต่งงานนั้น แตกต่างกันไปในแต่ละท้องถิ่น และเปลี่ยนไปตามยุคสมัย
